Wemmick tells Pip that Jaggers never locks a door or window at night. He knows he won't be robbed because convicts are afraid of him. But he also tells Pip that he should be especially careful to look at Jagger's maid. He says Pip will see "a wild beast tamed." This is Wemmick's way of preparing Pip for the realization that Jagger's maid is actually Estella's birth mother.
