There have been any number of demographic or social changes that have occurred in connection with families in the United States. I will look at three here.
- Smaller families. People are having fewer children now than they have in the past. There are only about half the number of children being born (per 1,000 Americans) than there were 100 years ago.
- More divorce. Divorce rates in the US have increased greatly in last 50 years or so. Strikingly, in today's society, divorce is much more of a problem for the lower classes and less educated people. They get divorced much more than educated and better-off people do.
- Change in the role of women. As women have entered the workforce in much greater numbers, the family has changed. We have gone away from the stereotypical family in which dad goes to work and mom stays home with the kids. This has had a huge impact on family dynamics.
