The answer to this question can be found throughout the text, but the first location in the novel is in chapter 2. Readers are told that most of Jess's teachers do not appreciate his drawings and artistic talent. The exception is the music teacher, Miss Edmunds. Jess loves Miss Edmunds and music class; however, the music class only meets on Fridays. The other unfortunate part of music class is that it only meets for a half an hour.

Jess is artistic to begin with, so music class is something that he would probably love no matter what, but Miss Edmunds is the main reason that Jess looks forward to the class. She is unlike any other teacher that Jess has. She simply sees the world differently, and that resonates with Jess. Miss Edmunds is also the one teacher that accepts Jess's artistic talent and also encourages him to further develop the talent.

Jess so deeply enjoys Miss Edmunds and her music class that he refers to it as a magical half an hour at one point in the text. We are told that other students publicly make fun of Miss Edmunds and her music class; however, those same students also seem to enjoy the magical and musical thirty minutes just as much as Jess.
