In chapter four, Johnny and Pony travel to Buck Merril's place, where they find Dally and ask him for help. When Johnny and Pony meet up with Dally, he gives Pony a towel to dry off and hands the boys a gun and fifty dollars. Dally then gives Pony Buck Merril's brown leather jacket and instructs them to hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville. In Windrixville, Dally tells Pony and Johnny that there is an abandoned church on Jay Mountain with a water pump in the back where they can hide out until things settle down at home. He also tells the boys to buy a week's supply of food and not to leave the abandoned church no matter what. Dally then promises Pony and Johnny that he will visit them whenever the coast is clear, and the boys proceed to follow Dally's advice.

Rather than trying to run away someplace really far away, Dally tells them to go hop a freight train and jump off in a town nearby. He describes a church on the top of “Jay Mountain” that is abandoned where they can hole up for a while until things quiet down.

He also gets them some money and then tells them to go out as soon as they get there and get enough food to last them for a week. He wants them to be sure not to be going out and hanging around the town but to lay low and stay out of sight. He tells them to just wait up there and that he will figure out a way to get in touch with them when the time is right.
