Dr. Spivey is employed at the mental hospital that is the setting of Ken Kesey's novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. He attended the same high school as McMurphy, and he generally finds McMurphy's actions more amusing than the other staff members. Scanlon is one of the Acute patients who has actually been committed to the hospital. One of the more stubborn patients, he has an interest in explosives and the six o'clock news. It is Scanlon who suggests to the Chief that he escape after he smothers McMurphy. McMurphy has been convicted of the statutory (but not forced) rape of a 15 year old girl.
