This novel was published in 1945. It takes place in England (Major teaches the animals the song Beasts of England). Its publication was delayed until after World War II ended because it criticised communism (and socialism), the political system of the Soviet Union. During World War II, the Soviet Union was on the side of the allies - i.e. England and the United States-- so it would not have been a good idea to criticize one of your allies during the war. After the war was over, however, it soon became evident that what Winston Churchill had been saying all along was true - Stalin was a devil! Soon, the Soviet Union became a foe to the United States and England, and the undeclared conflict referred to as The Cold War began. The Cold War did not end until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

The novel is considered a modern work, an example of the inherent faults in communism. Although everyone is supposed to be "equal" - in reality, this seldom happens. Just like on the farm. Some animals are more equal than others.
