What is a controversial topic in world history that is interesting and has been researched?

I'm writing an essay for my world history class and I can choose any topic. I'm wondering what interesting and controversial topics there are that I can write about.

Here's a good topic:  Who is to blame for the cause of WWI?  Historians have debated over this one for years.  Some say that it is Germany because of their invasion of Belgium.  Others claim that it is Russia for its mobilization in defense of Serbia.  Others claim that it is Austria-Hungary for giving Serbia an ultimatum that it knew would not be agreed upon after the death of the Archduke.  Most historians agree that Germany does not deserve all the blame for the war.

Another good topic--What was the main reason for the fall of the Western Roman Empire?  Once again, historians have argued that it was due to barbarian invasion, economic collapse, plague, and many other reasons.  Take a look at these and see if there is a reason that really stands out for you, and then formulate your thesis.

Yet another:  Was the United States justified in using the atomic bomb on Japan in 1945?  Some historians think that Japan was on the verge of surrender while others argue that an invasion of Japan would have been an inevitable bloodbath.

If you have all of world history to choose from, there are so many possible topics.  Here are three examples from very different eras of history:

  • Who caused the Cold War to happen?  Was it the fault of the United States or was the Soviet Union more to blame?
  • Should Christopher Columbus be seen as a hero or as a villain?  There are those who say that Columbus is responsible for genocide while others argue that he was a great explorer.
  • Was European imperialism good for the countries that got colonized?  Some historians argue that British imperialism, in particular, was beneficial to the economic and political systems of the colonized countries.
