What are concrete examples of five things for each of Lorraine, John and Mr. Pignati that would be reflective of them? (e.g. smokes and booze for John, journal for Lorraine, etc.)

For Lorraine I would most definitely give her a journal.  She wants to be a writer when she grows up, so it makes sense that she would be interested in writing down her thoughts onto paper at such a young age.  Since writing in her journal is important, Lorraine needs to have a "special" journal writing pen.  She should also have a book about black magic.  She told John that his eyes reminded her of the all-seeing Egyptian eye and that she read about it in a book of black magic. Because she wants to be a writer, it makes sense that she is well read, so she would need a library card. She loves going to the zoo and believes that she understands animals, so Lorraine would have a season pass.

John is a bit of a handful, quite mischievous and a chronic liar to everyone except Lorraine.  He needs a secret stash of firecrackers for his school pranks. John also has a fake ID.  The book says that he is only 15 years old, but is a smoker and a drinker.  He should be able to get that stuff from other people for only so long.  John is handsome and knows it, so I think he should have a comb to make sure he can do his hair when he really needs to sell his looks. Because he smokes so much, he should have his own pack of cigarettes, and sunglasses to cover up his eyes after a hangover.

Mr. Pignati has a set of electrician's tools.  That was his career, so it makes sense that he still has the tools. He always has alcohol on hand at the house, which explains why John describes him as having a "bit of a beer stomach." He carries a picture of his wife with him.  He goes to the zoo more than Lorraine, so he most definitely has a season pass.  Lastly, the easy one: he has a collection of ceramic pigs.
