In the book In the time of the Butterflies the crown of thorns are a special plant.  The family has been observed for days by Tellico’s soldiers.  He put a set of soldiers to watch the house.  The soldiers move closer and closer to the house where they leave their cigarette buts on the ground and their food mess.

The mother gets frustrated and she takes action to get the soldiers away from her home.  She pours baby bath water on them, and she plants thorn of rose’s bushes because she hopes they will get stuck and will have to move elsewhere.

the crown of thorns is used to compare the suffering of jesus for our sins and patria's suffering to see her son in such pain. mary watched her son suffer and die, just as patria watches her son suffer. that is patria's "crown of thorns," her suffering, for the movement. jesus suffered for our sins, patria suffered for the movement.
