In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus and his men come upon the Land of the Lotus Eaters in one of their many adventures. The lotus flowers are addictive, and make those who eat them forget all of their troubles. They make Odysseus' crew lose their longing to go home. All they want to do is eat this plant and stay where they are. The lotus flower is symbolic of any addiction. If all you want to do is play video games, then video games are your lotus flower. Drugs, of course, are the obvious connection because the lotus flower is a sort of drug in The Odyssey. For some people, the lotus flower might be money or gambling. People who do something over and over because of the pleasure it gives them, despite any negative consequences are our modern day lotus eaters.
