"Common interest" friendships can form at any age and across generations, but the modifier denotes that these relationships are formed mostly because of a shared interest. These interests can vary significantly across age groups and just among different friends.

Consider a girl in high school. She may have a "common interest" friendship with her biology lab partner. They enjoy working together on dissections and both work hard to ensure a good grade, but they aren't hanging out together on Friday night. She may also have a "common interest" friendship with the women in her fitness class that meets two evenings a week. She enjoys the way they push each other's physical limits and the way they encourage each other.
