Austen’s novel is known for its witticisms and witty humor. There are several characters who come across as being humorous. Mr. Collins is seen as a humorous character in his self-importance and pompous attitude. He takes himself too seriously, which comes across as funny. When he proposes to Elizabeth, he says something about his feelings running away from him, which does not fit his personality. He is not a passionate person who’s feelings get the better of him. And this is proven by the fact that he turns around and finds another wife when Elizabeth rejects him. Lady Catherine is humorous in that she is overly pompous and self-righteous. There are many characters that are so over the top that they come across as humorous. Lydia and Mrs. Bennet are good examples of this. They are both so silly and so driven to climb the social ladder that they come across as being ridiculous. We find characters like Elizabeth funny she makes many humorous comments and seems to be laughing with us, but the reader is laughing AT Lydia and Mrs. Bennet for their silly behavior.
