Twenty-six illegal immigrants from Mexico have tragically died in the searing heat of the Sonoran desert as they tried to make the dangerous crossing into the United States. As it quickly becomes clear, the authorities are simply unprepared to deal with such a large-scale catastrophe. Despite plenty of tough rhetoric from politicians about dealing with the immigration crisis, the authorities are chronically under-staffed and under-resourced, unable to get a handle on this growing problem.

When the bodies of the dead immigrants are finally recovered, they are sent to the Yuma Medical Center in Arizona. The doctors who work there are totally overwhelmed by the sheer number of bodies arriving. This highlights once again the inadequacy of the existing infrastructure in getting to grips with the illegal immigration crisis.

To make matters worse, the response from the authorities shows a complete lack of coordination. The Border Patrol have handed over the survivors to the Yuma Medical Center without arresting them so that they won't be responsible for the immigrants' medical bills. It seems that every government agency is simply looking out for its own interests instead of doing everything they can to make the system work effectively.
