Charlemagne was born in 742 CE.  At that time, in had been over 200 years since the Roman Empire in the west had fallen.  In the intervening time, Europe had split up into many small political entities.  Charlemagne reunited much of Western Europe under his rule for the first time since the fall of Rome.  By doing so, he helped to create the idea that all of Western Europe was one entity.  This helped to give rise to the entire idea of Western Europe as a single cultural region.  This is him major impact on European history.
