The major characters in this story apart from the main character Ebenezer Scrooge are Jacob Marley, Scrooge's old business partner who warns him about upcoming visits from the ghosts, the ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmases to Come. Fred, Scrooge's nephew, tries to get his uncle to come to Christmas dinner at the beginning of the story. Scrooge also employs Bob Cratchit, who also plays a role in the story along with his children, Martha, Peter, and Tiny Tim. The story also includes Belle, an old girlfriend who left Scrooge when they were younger, Old Fezziwig, Scrooge's old employer, and Fan Scrooge, Scrooge's sister who died. In the vision of the future, Mrs. Dilber sells some of Scrooge's clothing and Fred buys some of the clothing. There is also a young boy who Scrooge sends to buy a Christmas goose in the final part of the story.
