Edmund has a quick rational mind, and he makes educated decisions. This is a help to them because when he and his sister are left alone without food for days,  he at first resists breaking his aunt's rules. But over time he learns to trust in his own judgement, and it is he who takes over  providing for them both  and watching over his sister, as well as Poe, at times. It is due to his quick thinking that saved his sister's life. Edmund jumped into the bay to save her from drowning. He is also able to help Poe pick up on clues, and put the evidence together.
