The benefits to a woman of being in law enforcement are similar to those for men. It is a steady job with relatively high prestige in most communities. It is a way to help the community and to promote justice and public order. For a woman in particular, it might be attractive as a way to go outside traditional roles and to be something of a pioneer.
The challenges to women are great. Law enforcement is traditionally a very male and very macho line of work. There have been many issues with sexual harassment in the work place from male coworkers who do not feel that women belong. There are difficulties (as in many professions) for women who want to have active family lives. These sorts of challenges make it difficult for many women to get involved in and remain in law enforcement.
