There are a number of things that businesses can do to try to motivate their employees. Of course, not all things will work to motivate all employees since individual people are different from one another. However, some things that generally work to motivate workers are:
- Allowing workers to feel that they are important. Employees who feel that they play a large and important role in producing something are much more likely to feel motivated than those who do not. Therefore, companies need to give employees (as much as possible) jobs that are clearly important to the functioning of their team, their department, or the firm as a whole.
- Giving workers feedback about their performance. People generally want to do well at things. They want to be able to know what they are doing well and what they are doing poorly. If they do not have any idea about how they can improve and what they are already doing well, they will feel lost and will not be likely to be very motivated.
- Allow them opportunities for growth and advancement. People generally like to feel that they have the potential to be more than what they are at a given moment. It is therefore important to allow employees opportunities to learn new skills and, if possible, to advance to a higher and more responsible position.
These are a few of the things that firms can do to motivate their employees.
