In terms of the examination of the mother/son relationship, then the novel 'Sons and Lovers' by D H Lawrence himself is similar in theme to his own short story 'The Rocking-Horse Winner.' In both stories, parent/child relationships, parenting and the responsibilities/dilemmas of childhood are explored. Whilst the mother in 'The Rocking-Horse Winner' is drawn as slightly colder and less engaged with her children, the sons portrayed in 'Sons and Lovers' and the short story are more similar - they both feel keenly the sense of responsibility, guilt and obligation towards their mothers. In the novel, Paul's mother is deeply engaged with her son's welfare and future, staying involved all the time and intervening where necessary - such as in getting him placed in a job. In the short story, the son feels the obligation that Paul feels towards his mother for this commitment - except it isn't there as she is dis-engaged most of the time. Yet he still feels the need to solve all the problems in the home to the point where this shadows his own life and eventually takes it.
