What is the best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely, or unhappy?
I think the answer most fitting is companionship. As Anne didn't have someone her sex and age to confide in during this particularly trying time of her life, she invented " Kitty. " Kitty was much more than a simple diary to Anne; this was her imaginary listener to whom she could share her more secret thoughts. Little did she know that she was writing a work of literature which would one day be perused and studied by millions.
As much as it helps us to understand what people had to endure during the German occupation in Holland, I have often wondered if it was somehow a breach of trust or privacy to have published it in the first place. I hope she would have agreed to this choice, understanding what a great contribution her diary is to our approaching a very sinister chapter in European history. We should never forget what happened (or pretend that it didn't) so that such a colossal horror will never happen again.
