Alkaline earth metals belong to group 2 of the periodic table of elements. This series consists of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium and radium. Compounds and minerals of these elements, such as lime, Epsom, and beryl have been in use for a really long time and it was only later that the elements were extracted from these. Some of the benefits or applications of alkaline earth elements are:

  • Beryllium is used as a dopant in semiconductors, electrical insulator and heat conductor, apart from military applications.
  • Magnesium is used in pyrotechnics, signals, flares, in the aviation industry and also for preventing corrosion of iron pipes.
  • Calcium is primarily used in manufacturing of cement and mortar. Lime is still used in many parts of the world for painting walls. It is also used for making many useful alloys with other elements. Gypsum is used for setting the plasters in hospitals.
  • Other metals of this series have relatively lesser applications.

Hope this helps.
