The customs and border protection agency is task with helping secure the United States physical and maritime borders. In addition to this they help process and clear goods imported and exported in and out of the country. In this capacity they help ensure that counterfeit or prohibited goods and products do not make their way into the hands of American consumers. By seeking assistance from the CBP, companies can help ensure that:

  1. Their brand, trademarks and intellectual properties are protected from counterfeiters.
  2. Enforcement through official government fines and penalties helps deter some counterfeiters and intellectual property theft
  3. Increased enforcement helps protect brand image and market share by preventing imitation or counterfeited products from reaching consumers

Although there are benefits to seeking the assistance and working with the CBP, there are also some disadvantages, the primary barrier being the cost of monitoring and enforcement. Monitoring intellectual property and copyright violations cost a lot to a company in terms of legal and human resource and may be prohibitive to many organizations.
