Though the California-based band Motley Crue is one of the most recognizable names in music and has been a standard sound in the heavy metal/rock music world, the group has only earned one music industry award.
According to the band's official website, Motely Crue is
[t]he World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. Vince Neil (vocals), Mick Mars (guitar), Nikki Sixx (bass) and Tommy Lee (drums) laid the foundation for their inimitable career in the ’80s with their genre-bending music, a mix of anthemic choruses, stadium-sized riffs, punk rock and melodic power, along with their relentless reputation, typifying an excess never before seen in modern music.
In 1990, Motley Crue was nominated in the favorite heavy metal/rock category both for band of the year and for album of the year (Dr. Feelgood) by the American Music Academy, but they did not win either award.
The next year, the band was nominated for exactly the same awards, but this time they won the album award with Dr. Feelgood.
Also in 1990, Motley Crue was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Hard Rock Performance" for "Dr. Feelgood." They did not win. In 1991, the band was nominated in the same category for "Kickstart My Heart" and again did not win the award. The group had a resurgence of popularity in 2009 and was nominated in the now-familiar category for their performance of "Saints of Los Angeles," but again they did not win.
In 1990, Motley Crue was nominated for an MTV Music Award in the category of "Best Heavy Metal Video" for "Kickstart My Heart." They did not win that award, either.
Despite their lack of official music awards, the band has proven to be a music icon spanning more than three decades of music and listeners. They have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, has had more than 20 top hit singles, and band members have written five books which have become New York Times best-sellers.
Motley Crue was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006, an indication of the band's popularity and longevity and popularity.
This year, 2014, marks the beginning of the farewell tour for Motley Crue, a tour which will be complete by the end of 2015.
