Well, the author himself is from Afghanistan, and so we can safely infer that one goal he had in writing this amazing novel was to communicate with a wider readership the tragedy that is Afghanistan, and how it is so different from his childhood memories and how individual lives are caught up against a backdrop of tyrannical violence. However, there are clearly other themes, such as one man's quest to redeem himself from a childhood mistake that has lived with him ever since and unconditional love.
