Philip Malloy's parents are extremely supportive of their son and naturally want what is best for him.  Philip's father takes an interest in his son's running and possible track career; the two of them bond over sports talk and statistics.  Ben buys Philip a very nice pair of running shoes; he hopes that Philip will make the track team.  Avi makes a point of showing Philip's relationship with his parents, particularly his father, to show the communication break-down between parents and their children.   Even though Philip's mother and father take an interest in their son and try to understand him, they really only see the side of Philip that he chooses to show them; unfortunately, Philip manipulates his parents, using their trust and caring to get what he wants.
