What areas other than the environment, disaster relief, affordable housing, and at-risk youth might be appropriate for strategic philanthropy by Home Depot?

Businesses always benefit from supporting local charities and organizations.  Home Depot might allow each store to select one local group to support.  They would be reaching their target customers by participating locally.  Home Depot might also help with local building projects.  They could assist schools with playground equipment or other essentials that are stocked in the store.  For instance, they might offer to build storage sheds for sporting equipment.  Home Depot might also assist with other local building projects like building homes with organizations like Habitat for Humanity.  Any of these ideas would allow the store to promote their products directly to their customers.  It also helps to create a sense of community and loyalty with these customers.  If Home Depot built storage sheds for the local football team for instance, they could easily place a sign or advertisement along the side.  Parents and team members would be more likely to shop at Home Depot because they have helped the school.  Strategic philanthropy is often more effective when it is done on a local level rather than a global scale.
