Elizabeth George Speare's historical novel The Sign of the Beaver tells the story of Matt James Hallowell. Matt is a thirteen-year-old boy who, along with his father, settles in America in the eighteenth century. The two build a cabin together in Maine. The rest of Matt's family is in Massachusetts, and Matt's father must travel back there to get them and bring them to the new home in Maine. While his father is traveling, Matt is left in Maine to watch over the cabin and his family's land. With the help of a Native American friend, he learns how to survive and adapt to his new life in the absence of his family.

When the weather is cold, Matt must figure out how to stay warm. His clothes are tattered, so he decides to make himself new pants from an old blanket. His endeavor is successful, so he turns his attention to making himself mittens from rabbit skins, which also goes well. He then decides to make himself a warm hat. He creates a deadfall trap and uses it to successfully capture a marten, which is a weasel-like animal. He uses the animal's skin to make himself a hat.

Realizing that he is resourceful and has an aptitude for making things, he starts making gifts for his family. He makes a cradle for his new sibling; wooden dishes for his mother; and a doll made from cornhusks for his sister, Sarah.
