What are the strengths and weaknesses of Jack and Ralph in Lord of the Flies?
In Lord of the Flies, the strengths of Jack are single-mindedness, fearlessness, and resolution. His weaknesses are stubbornness, cruelty, and a penchant for violence. Ralph's strengths are intelligence, hard work, and an understanding of what it takes to make things work on the island. Unlike Jack, he is a true leader. Ralph's weaknesses are naivety and an inability to comprehend the nature of evil.
Despite his many drawbacks, Jack has certain strengths. For one thing, he's quite resolute. Even after the very public humiliation of the other boys rejecting him in the popular vote for leader, he bounces back almost at once. Driven and determined, he's not about to lie down in a corner and cry. He believes in himself and is hell-bent on making a come back as soon as possible, which he does.
Jack is utterly fearless; be it boy or beast, nothing scares him. In most circumstances, this would make him the ideal leader, but as we shall see in due course, his many weaknesses let him down. Nevertheless, Jack's single-mindedness is definitely a strength in that it gives him an overriding sense of purpose in life and gives him the confidence to become ruler of the island.
