Antivirus software protects computers and mobile devices from malware infections. The software scans computer files and applications to detect and remove malware. Using an antivirus program ensures that computer hardware and software are protected from malware such as spyware and Trojan horses.

New types of malware are being developed every day. For this reason, it is best practice to update antivirus software regularly. In addition, setting up the software to automatically run in the background is an effective way of ensuring that a computer system is fully protected. Other ways of managing the software include scheduling virus scans and initiating scans when new files are downloaded into the computer system.

Installing antivirus software does not guarantee complete protection, because hackers and spyware can find security holes in the network. Therefore, to ensure that a computer system is fully protected, a firewall needs to be installed.

A firewall is a software or hardware system that analyzes the network traffic into and out of a computer system to block hackers and spyware. Firewalls can restrict or allow outside network access into a system. By following a set of rules, they can filter traffic from malicious sources to mitigate threats.

Despite firewalls being effective in protecting computer systems from outside attacks, they cannot prevent internal attacks. While firewalls are effective in preventing malicious online attacks, such as hacking, email abuse, and backdoor access, they cannot prevent malware attacks. Therefore, using a firewall alone leaves a system vulnerable to malware. Installing antivirus software with a firewall is one way of ensuring that a computer system is fully protected.
