In literature, a motif is a symbol or other figure that helps develop a story's themes. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has several. One of the most obvious is, of course, the Master Bolt. Zeus's famous weapon is the catalyst for the entire story. It also represents Zeus's power and serves as a symbol of peace in the world of the gods. When Zeus's bolt is returned to him, thereby returning his power to its rightful place, a war between the gods is stopped before it can begin.

Since Percy is the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea, it should come as no surprise that water serves as another motif. When Percy is in the water, he is cured of all his injuries and is given the strength to continue fighting. He had also never met Poseidon when he first discovers his true lineage, but when he steps into the water, he feels instantly connected to his father. For Percy, the water is his strength, healing, and a bond to the father he had never known.

Medusa's head as well as the Minotaur horn are also motifs. They are the first tokens of battle Percy keeps, symbolizing his transition from a regular teenager to a demigod. Percy even sends Medusa's head to the gods to show them he's a warrior now and not to be trifled with.

In literature, dreams usually represent something. Percy's dreams are able to give him insight into the problems he and his friends are trying to solve on their quest. They often come in the form of messages from the gods, giving Percy the knowledge he, Annabeth, and Grover need to continue their journey.
