There are many themes dealing with people and society in Things Fall Apart. A few are:

  • Individual's place in society- This can be seen in the character of Okonkwo and his struggle within his own culture. Look also at Nwoye, Ekwefi, and Ezinma.
  • Religous conflict- This is most obvious in the last 7 chapters, which focus on the tension and outright violence between the British missionaries and the native Ibo. On a smaller scale, it is reflected in the relationship between Okonkwo and Nwoye, following his decision to convert.
  • Gender roles- The roles of men and women are distinct in the Ibo culture, but we see several characters that defy those stereotypes. Nwoye has feminine characteristics, while Ezinma and Ekwefi have strong masculine traits. The priestess Chielo is the perhaps the best example, as she has more power than most men in the tribe.

Hope this helps!
