In The Healers, Ajoa, the daughter of Damfo and Ama, is closer to her father than her mother. She is a teenager during much of the novel. Described as exceptionally beautiful, she also uses good judgment. While Damfo, the leader of the healers, prefers to live simply in the forest, Ama grows tired of this existence after seven years and decides to return to the town, where she remarries. Ajoa chooses to stay with her father. Learning many of the healer’s ways, she assists her father and shows great spiritual depth. Densu, who is Damfo’s protégé, and Ajoa knew each other almost their whole lives; he had never forgotten his first impression of her sensitive eyes. By the novel’s end, they are engaged.
