Jodie is the brother who stays in the swamp with Kya the longest and the one she reconnects with years later. Though Kya can't remember her other siblings' real names later, she remembers they were called Missie, Murph, and Mandy.

After Kya's mother leaves, her siblings quickly follow suit. One morning, she comes into the kitchen to find Jodie making breakfast. They share eggs and grits. She suggests that they run away together into the swamp, and Jodie says that it's okay.

That evening, Jodie comes outside, and Kya can see that their father has punched him in the face. He tells Kya that he has to go and can't live there anymore. This will leave her alone with their abusive father. Jodie tells her to be careful, to stay out of the house if people come over, to hide in the marsh, cover her tracks, and hide from their father.

Years later, Kya publishes her research and Jodie sees her book. This sparks his interest in reuniting with her. As an adult, he regrets leaving the way that he did. He also tells her that he wouldn't know Mandy, Missy, or Murph if he passed them on the street. He never reconnected with them.
