Codes of conduct are guidelines that are designed and intended to be followed. Generally an organization, school, or business will develop a code of conduct based on what is important to their particular company. For example, in a business, this may include legal rights, safety issues, dress codes, and the appropriate methods for taking time off. In a school, this may include expected behaviors, cheating policies, absentee policies, and discrimination and harassment policies, just to name a few.

Codes of conduct vary from company to company, but there is generally always a section on harassment, abuse, and discrimination. This is partially for the safety of the employees or students but also for insurance of the company. Most organizations have a no-tolerance policy when it comes to this section of the code of conduct. The other sections may or may not be more lenient and forgiving. For example, a dress code policy may include a "three strikes rule," or an absentee policy may lead to other punishments, such as detention.

The purpose of a code of conduct is to set the ground rules for everyone involved. It explains the expectations of everyone in the organization and provides procedures to follow if these expectations are not met. It also ensures safety and reduces discrimination or harassment. Often times, an organizations has individuals sign their code of conduct to ensure it has been read and will be abided by.

An important aspect to note regarding codes of conduct is they are not always extremely detailed because their purpose is to set the standards of behavior. Company policies and procedures usually go more in depth regarding job functions.

Another important concept to note is that a code of conduct is not the same as a code of ethics. A code of ethics is more general and used across the board. A code of conduct is specific to an organization. However, a code of conduct may incorporate concepts from a code of ethics.
