The most prominent example of this theme is when the Giver shows Jonas a video of the release of an infant. Jonas then witnesses his father lethally inject a baby and dispose of its body. This event takes place in Chapter 19 and Jonas is immediately filled with disgust, hate, and anger when he discovers the true meaning behind the term release. Lowry writes,

Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain clawing its way forward to emerge in a cry. (151)

Jonas's father had kept the secret regarding the terrible truth behind the term release to himself in order to maintain stability in their society. After Jonas witnesses the release, he becomes motivated to flee the community.
