What is an example of modern day heroism? Do you think modern heroes can make the same choices as Huck and Jim and how do they relate?
In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jim and Huck both decide that their relationships with their friends and loved ones are more important than their freedom, lives, and in Huck's case, his soul.
One modern hero is the young lady, Neda, from Iran who was killed several weeks ago as she was about to attend a protest of the questionable Iranian election results. She was shot as she tried to get out of her car. Her death was not random, though, because she knew from the days of violence before her death that attending the protest would be risky. Yet, she decided that the ability to voice her opinion, to support her fellow countrymen, and to cry out for freedom were all worth the risk.
In her case, I believe that she made a decision that went against many of the religious rulers in her country. Although I doubt that she felt that she was possibly damning her soul, she still had to so something that was very unpopular with the many of the leaders and older generation of her country.
In America, there are still heroes who make some of the same choices as Huck and Jim, but because we no longer promote slavery as being moral or practice Jim Crow laws, I doubt that most Americans would feel that they are giving up their souls in order to help a friend or loved one. They might have to relinquish their own freedom or in some cases their lives, but I think that, like Neda, most would feel that they are doing the right thing and that their souls would be at peace.
