What are the advantages of having both an immune and an inflammatory system of defense?
Inflammation works in conjunction with the immune system.
It is how your body identifies bacteria and viruses. It also sets in motion reactions to protect you.
The immune system reacts to antigens. Antigens actually are only molecules on the cells surface. They are usally proteins. They exist on the surface cells of viruses, fungi and bacteria. In addition, toxins and chemicals can also be antigens, even though they are not alive. The immune detroys these.
Inflammation is an integral part of destroying these antigens.For example when you break an ankle the inflammation and stiffness in the surrounding bones protects that area from further harm. This enables that particular area to heal. Infalmmation is a signal to the body that something is wrong.
The inflammatory response (inflammation) goes into effect when tissues are harmed by bacteria, trauma, toxins or heat. The tissues that are injured release chemicals some of which are: histamine, bradykinin, serotonin. They cause blood to flow into the tissues, which causes swelling to occur.
The chemicals also act an an attractant causing the white blood cell or the phagocyte to destroy microorganisms and bad cells.
