The main advantages of living in the city have to do with the fact that cities have dense populations that can support all sorts of businesses.  A person who is living in a major city does not ever have to worry about being unable to get access to a given amenity.  Cities have art museums and symphonies.  Many of them have professional sports teams.  Major entertainers come to cities on their concert tours.  Cities have airports from which a person can often fly non-stop to a variety of destinations around the world.  Cities have high-class store and restaurants that feature a wide variety of cuisines.  There are generally more high-paying jobs.

However, the dense populations come with a price.  City living tends to be much more expensive than living in the country because housing is more expensive.  There can be little space for solitude in the city since there are so many people.  There is typically not much open space.  The city can feel very cramped and dirty and is often home to more crime than non-urban areas.

When one chooses to live in the city, then, one is choosing cultural and economic benefits over a more relaxed atmosphere with what might be called a better quality of life.
