One aspect that sets My Side of the Mountain apart from other novels is the author's use of a non-linear plot line. In most novels, the plot usually occurs sequentially and may incorporate an occasional flashback. In My Side of the Mountain, the novel actually begins in the middle of the story as the protagonist Sam suffers through a blizzard in a hollowed-out tree; then as the novel progresses, the author flashes all the way back to Sam's initial decision to leave his parents' apartment and run away to the country. The immensely long flashback lasts until chapter 18, and then finally, the novel returns to a linear sequential order.
