For unknown reasons to the reader, Farquhar was unable to join the Confederate army. He is, however, a prosperous farmer and slave owner from an old and respected Alabama family. He states that he would do whatever is necessary to help the South win the war; no request would be beneath him or be too dangerous for him. He considers it an honor to be asked to blow up the bridge at Owl Creek, an act for which he is being hanged.
