Suspense is created with foreshadowing in the chess game at the White's house. Mr. White puts his king in unnecessary danger-and realizes " a fatal mistake after it was too late". The atmosphere of the White's home becomes tense after Mr. White wishes on the paw. The wind picks up, and the people become unusually subdued. The suspense of not knowing what the first two wishes of the original owner were, or the outcome of Morris's wishes amplify the dreaded mystery of the power of the paw.
