The first was that Auk XXI was fired off into the sky, the second was that Homer's father went back to work.  Of course he is still far from ready to be returning to the mine, Homer describes him as still having a horrible gash closed with stitches and his right eye blind and glassy and the fact that the doctor ordered him not to go back to work.  As part of this, the black phones are also reinstalled in the home and Homer's mother can do nothing about it thought it is likely continuing to break her heart.  Their family in many ways appear to have broken up for good, as his father is never home, his mother cooks dinner but does not eat with them, and he has always felt isolated from Jim.
