3) Isaac's girlfriend breaks up with him after he loses his eyes, which leads him to have a serious emotional reaction.

4) The book An Imperial Affliction, a favorite book of both Hazel and Augustus, has an unsatisfactory ending, which frustrates them.

5) Hazel wants to go to Amsterdam, but she has already used her "wish" from the "Make a Wish" foundation.

6) Hazel gets worse after getting better for a while, which almost makes it impossible for Augustus and her to travel to Amsterdam.

8) As Hazel and Augustus are walking up the stairs in the Anne Frank house, Hazel has a very hard time managing the stairs, which impacts their visit and makes it so she has to rest afterwards.

9) Augustus becomes very sick after his cancer comes out of remission. This complicates things both by almost preventing him from going on the trip and also ultimately leading to his death.

10) With Augustus being terminally ill, Hazel wants to spend more time with him. However, this is complicated by the fact he is very sick and does not always have the energy for company to be over.
