Educated is a memoir by Tara Westover. It was first published in 2018 and describes the life of Tara Westover and her family. Tara grows up in a very religious Mormon family in rural Idaho but finally manages to break free from her family’s influence and instead embarks on a successful academic career.

In the novel, a number of accidents happen to various family members. For example, Tara’s mother sustains a brain injury following a car accident, and her brother Shawn also injures his head through various falls. However, the most shocking accident happens to Tara’s brother Luke. Luke gets injured when working on the scrapyard with their father. Luke and Tara’s father are draining petrol from the tanks of the old cars on the scrapyard, and when Luke is using a cutting torch in order to remove a tank, his leg catches fire. Oddly enough, the father does not seem to do anything in order to help Luke. As Luke is unable to put the fire out himself, he runs down the mountain, screaming in pain, and as a result sets fire to the mountain in the process of running back to the farm. When Tara sees him, she runs toward him and applies some of her mother’s remedies in order to help him. She also tries to cool his leg with water. Later, the mother takes over looking after him.
