Water must be treated for many reasons. The main reason is safety. Water is treated to remove any contaminants that may be harmful to whomever is going to be using the water. Recycling is also very important which leads to another reason that water is treated. After use, water is often returned to the environment. In doing so, we would not want to return contaminated water in fear of harming the ecosystems. This is why water is often treated prior to being returned to the environment.

We are very lucky that we get to drink clean water. Water treatment is very poor or even non-existent in some countries. There are many organizations working to create safe water for these areas.
