The first fourteen chapters of A Time to Kill  are all building blocks for the central story.  Tanya, Carl Lee’s daughter, is raped by the two red-neck white boys, Carl Lee prepares for revenge on the two boys, gets it in a vigilante style on the two boys at their hearing, and approaches Jake to represent him.  Jake struggles with the decision as to whether to represent Carl Lee or not out of concern for the extra costs it may cause in his life professionally and personally.
