Was the sacrifice by Sydney Carton an act of selfishness or an altruistic act (for the good of others)?

His sacrifice was out of love. The act was altruistic. He loves Lucie Manette so much he was willing to die for her, though whenever he got the chance to truely love her he just wanted her to remain happy.
