This is the story of a dog's change from a pet to a wild animal.

Buck is a very large pet dog in California around the time gold is discovered in the Yukon.  He is stolen and sent north to be a sled dog.

He has to learn quickly how to survive in this new situation that he finds himself in.  It is a very savage environment -- not what he was used to.  He adapts quickly and soon becomes leader of his pack (after killing the old leader).

As Buck becomes a stronger and more powerful dog, he starts to hear the "call of the wild."  He wants to become more like a wolf or primitive dog.  But he is still tied to the human world.

When Indians kill his last owner (whom he loved very much) Buck becomes the leader of a wolf pack.  He completes his transformation from pet dog to wild animal.
