The second-smallest independent nation in the world (after Vatican City), Monaco is a principality (city-state) located on the Mediterranean Sea between France and Italy. It is the home of the rich and famous, many of whom live in Monte Carlo, home of one of the most famous casinos in the world. Total population is about 33,000. It is ruled by Prince Albert II, whose family, the House of Grimaldi, has been in power since 1297. Perhaps its most famous resident was the glamorous actress, Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace after she married Prince Albert's father, Prince Rainier III, in 1956. She died tragically in a car accident in 1982 on one of the winding mountainous roads that overlook the Mediterranean.
