Veterans’ associations like the Disabled American Veterans remain important today because it is often difficult for individual veterans to advocate effectively regarding their own needs.
There are two aspects to this statement. First of all, it implies that veterans have significant needs. This is true because of the traumatic nature of what some veterans have been exposed to. Veterans who have seen combat can often suffer from various physical and mental problems. Today, there are many veterans who have major injuries from things like IEDs but who have survived. Many others have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These are serious and significant problems that cause veterans to have many needs.
Second, the statement says that individual veterans cannot be effective advocates. This is true in part because of the nature of their problems. For those who have mental and emotional problems, any sort of public life can be very difficult. It will be hard for them to try to push for the assistance that they need. In addition, it is always hard for individuals to cause change to occur. It is necessary to have groups that can advocate for the needs of the individuals. Their numbers give them much more clout than individuals would have.
For these reasons, veterans’ associations remain important today.
